Day 31 – Getting Upset With God
JOHN 16:5-11
Now I am going to Him who sent Me, yet none of you asks Me, “Where are You going?” Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in Me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see Me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned (John 16:5-11).
Jesus had the difficult task of telling His disciples that it was time for Him to go. He knew that this would bring them much sorrow, but He also knew that the Helper (the Holy Spirit) would not come unless He left.
After the Helper comes, the time of judgment begins. This is not a popular concept for us to accept. However, the Lord is serious about His calling upon our lives. The Good News is that we can be encouraged because we have a Helper, a Comforter, and an Advocate on our behalf.
Reflection
- Do you get upset when someone you love goes away?
- Are you reassured to know that they will return?
- How does it make you feel to know that Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit?
- Does it disturb you that the world comes under God’s judgment?
ZEPHANIAH 2:1-2
Gather together, gather together, O shameful nation, before the appointed time arrives and that day sweeps on like chaff, before the fierce anger of the Lord comes upon you, before the day of the Lord’s wrath comes upon you (Zephaniah 2:1-2).
This passage of Zephaniah is a call to the nation of Israel to come together in an assembly to pray, to repent, and to humble themselves before God. Sometimes in the Bible we see and hear of God’s fierce anger and coming judgment. God was just as upset with sin in those days as He is now. But today we have a relationship with God because of the work that Jesus did on the cross to separate those who believe in Him from the power of sin. Thank God!
Reflection
- Why would God not desire a nation?
- Was God’s judgment in the day of Zephaniah different than God’s judgment today?
- What difference does our relationship with the Holy Spirit make in regard to God’s judgment upon humanity?
- Is it acceptable for us to be upset with God?
