Day 6 – Three Days

JOHN 2:18-22

Then the Jews demanded of Him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove Your authority to do all this?”

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this tem­ple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple He had spoken of was His body. After He was raised from the dead, His disciples recalled what He had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken (John 2:18-22).

Jesus knew what was going to happen to Him after His death! He knew that He would be resurrected in three days. He knew His statement about the temple would cause controversy and confusion. He also knew that after His death and resurrection these same words would cause His disciples to remember His bold prophesy.

1. Do you think Jesus wanted to cause confusion about the temple?
2. Why would Jesus want people to remember both the Scriptures and His words?
3. Is it fair for God to challenge our views and beliefs?

JONAH 1:1-4,15,17

The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wicked­ness has come up before Me.”

But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up… Then they took Jonah and threw him over­board, and the raging sea grew calm… But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights (Jonah 1:1-4,15,17).

Jonah was called to go to Nineveh, the Capital of Assyria and the home of the most ruthless, cruel, and tortuous peoples alive. Small wonder that he was hesitant to be God’s representative to offer repentance to these sinners. His efforts to avoid this assignment were futile. God gave him three days in the belly of a fish to think about his plight.

2. Why would Jesus compare Himself to Jonah?
3. Can you believe a story like this to be true?
